What is Cytotechnology?
Cytotechnology is the microscopic
study of cell samples from various human body sites for the detection
and diagnosis of disease. The samples
may have been shed, scraped or aspirated from body tissues. The cytotechnologist
prepares the samples utilizing staining techniques to make the cellular
parts visible. The samples are examined microscopically to detect the
presence of cancer, pre-cancerous changes, infectious agents and inflammatory
processes. As a result of cytologic findings, physicians are often
able to diagnose and treat cancer before symptoms occur or before it
can be detected by other methods.
